Xavier Doherty made his Test debut at a time when Australia were all at sea in almost all departments, being battered by England in the Ashes 2010-2011. However, he had made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at MCG before that and raised Australia’s hopes of finally discovering a quality spinner since Shane Warne’s retirement.
But Doherty, after all these years, remains among those spinners Australia tried across formats, and failed to cement their position. He struggled on Test debut at The Gabba and in the next at Adelaide Oval, failing to create any impact whatsoever. He was dropped from the side and it was only three years later, on the 2012-13 tour of India, that he was seen in whites once again.
Doherty missed World Cup 2011 due to a back injury, but has somewhat managed to remain a regular player for Australia in ODIs. His ODI consistency earned him a place in the World Cup 2015 squad ahead of Nathan Lyon. Doherty also remained a part of the T20I side till late 2013 but lack of performances led to his axing.
