The 400th player to don the Baggy Green, Brad Haddin’s debut had been delayed by the dazzling presence of Adam Gilchrist on either side of the stumps. Grabbing the opportunity with both hands, Haddin has since been Australia’s premier gloveman and also a combative batsman. There is that typical Aussie grit and fighting spirit he embodies which has helped him comeback from a tough phase in 2012-13 in great style.
Haddin made his ODI debut in 2001, but had to wait another three years to get another game. He was on the sidelines as Australia lifted the World Cup in 2007, but, with Gilchrist approaching retirement, Haddin won a spot in the side on the strength of his batting. His aggressive streak later won him a promotion to the top in the limited overs formats.
After making his Test debut in 2008 Haddin scored his maiden Test century later in the year against New Zealand. He soon became a senior player and even led the side in a T20I in 2009. His ubiquitous presence behind the stumps helped lift the side during its dip at the turn of the decade.
He was in and out of the side with injuries, but he found his way back and played in the 2011 World Cup. He reclaimed his spot and was appointed vice-captain for Ashes 2013, where he finished with a world record of 29 dismissals in a series. He also took Australia to the brink of a victory at Trent Bridge. Later that year, during the return Ashes, Haddin was one of the key performers for Australia as they completed a 5-0 whitewash over their traditional rivals.
