Mitchell Starc’s emergence above the other young and talented pacemen in Australia could be attributed to the fact that he releases the ball from a good height and can move it either ways, along with his ability to generate bounce and pace.
Starc is an New South Wales (NSW) left-arm pacer, and the presence of senior pros like Brett Lee, Nathan Bracken and Stuart Clark would certainly have made the road tougher for him. And then, there were other such as Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins who were always waiting in the wings. But Starc pounced upon the opportunity which came his way and has cemented his place in the side. Though Cummins was the more talented of the two, Starc won the race because, unlike Cummins, he had less injury problems.
Starc enjoys role of being Australia's leading left-arm pacer when Mitchell Johnson is not around, as he has the necessary aggression and skills to live up to the expectations in absence of the latter. He is a decent batsman as well: a fighting 99 against India during their horror tour in 2012-13 bears testimony to that. Four half-centuries in his first 15 Tests prove that he can be a vital cog.
