Steven Smith’s strange transformation from a limited-overs whiz to a Test-specialist cricketer is one of the most mysterious aspects of Australian cricket. Supremely confident with the bat, he has the swagger that oozes more self-assurance than arrogance. He can play both big hits and deft touches with aplomb, and he fields like a man supercharged by lightening.
After making his Test debut as a leg-spinner who could bat a little in 2010, Smith’s sub-par performances had him out of the side after just five matches. However, he made a roaring comeback in the 2013 Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the “homework-gate” episode saw four of Australia’s first-choice player sit out.
It proved to be a blessing in disguise as Smith was picked as a frontline batsman and shone with a terrific 92 that revitalised his career. With a run of form that saw him score four hundreds in seven Tests against England and South Africa in trying conditions, Smith established himself as one of Australia’s brightest young talents in recent times.
Although he is a fantastic fielder and can be aggressive with the bat, he hasn’t quite established himself in Australia’s limited-overs sides. Smith has done well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Pune Warriors India and the Rajasthan Royals. Given the way he has grown as a cricketer, it is only a matter of time before he walks into the green and gold.
