With a simple action, Josh Hazelwood invokes memories of Craig McDermott. Having emerged from the under-19 circuit in 2010, Hazlewood was fast-tracked to make his ODI debut against England at Southampton. At the age of 19, he was one of the youngest to represent Australia, like McDermott. Though he came close to a Test debut later that year during the tour to India, he had to wait for another four years to win the Baggy Green.
With the likes of Brett Lee, Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Johnson etc before him, Hazlewood found it difficult to break into the Australian side. Others such as Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and James Pattinson also emerged to make his task tougher. However, Hazlewood fought through and returned to the Australian team in 2013. In late 2014, he cemented his spot with a five-wicket haul against South Africa in an ODI, which won him a berth in the World Cup squad.
That coveted Baggy Green came his way in 2014 against India in Brisbane. Hazlewood, like the rest of the Australian bowlers, struggled on an extremely hot opening day of the Test at the Gabba, but came back strongly on the second day to complete a five-wicket haul on debut.
