India have hardly found any medium-pace bowling all-rounders since Irfan Pathan. It was in January 2014 that Stuart Binny entered the fray after toiling at the domestic level for close to a decade.
Son of former India all-rounder Roger Binny, Stuart made his First-Class debut in 2003 against Tamil Nadu after playing for Karnataka and India in the Under-19s. In 2007 he joined ICL playing for Hyderabad Heroes and ICL India XI before returning to Karnataka in 2009.
With a bulky physique, Binny does not generate a lot of pace, but often frustrates batsmen with his accuracy, which fetches wickets mainly in the shortest format of the game. With the bat, Binny has boosted his reputation with breezy death-over cameos for Rajasthan Royals, who picked him in 2011.
He was the star all-rounder for the Royals in 2013, and was retained for the next season. He was also a vital cog in Karnataka’s successful 2013-14 Ranji Trophy campaign and helped them to a win in the Irani Trophy in the same season with a brisk hundred. In between, he made it to India’s Asia Cup and World T20 squad as well after an ODI debut in New Zealand. He was picked for the Test series in England for the summer of 2014.
