When Rohit Sharma had burst onto the scene during the 2006 Under-19 World Cup, he was earmarked for success. After a successful debut season, he was picked for India’s tour to England and Ireland in 2007, where he made his debut at Belfast. However, it was during India’s ICC World T20 2007 triumph that he made a real name with a crucial fifty in a must-win game against South Africa and a quick-fire cameo in the final. That was followed up with a good performance during the tri-series Down Under in 2008.
However, in the years after that encouraging start, Rohit was unable to maintain consistency and couldn’t establish himself. In 2010, he came close to a Test debut at Nagpur but injured himself on the morning of the game. While he was on the fringes and shined in patches, he was left out of the 2011 World Cup squad. He returned well with two Man of the Series Awards against West Indies that same year.
It was only in 2013 that Rohit made a mark once he was promoted to open the batting in One-Day International (ODI) cricket. The remarkable run included a brilliant 209 in an ODI at Bangalore against Australia. A Test debut followed at last and he duly responded with a couple of tons in his first two Tests against West Indies. Rohit is one of India’s biggest hopes and is considered one of the most talented batsmen with the extra time to play his shots — provided he can attain the consistency required to take things to the next level.
