A master of reverse-swing even at an early stage of his career Mohammed Shami had a good season for Bengal in 2011-12 and came onto the national radar when he toured the West Indies with India A in 2012. He impressed with his One-Day International (ODI) performances next year.
However, it was only in October 2013 that he made himself a fixture in the ODI side during the series against Australia. That paved the way for his Test debut against West Indies at Kolkata a month later. He got a nine-wicket haul on debut, and brought Eden Gardens and Wankhede to their feet with phenomenal exhibitions of reverse-swing at good pace.
His right-arm fast-medium bowling soon became important for India as they toured South Africa and New Zealand. He is seen as a bowler who can lead the bowling attack for the years to come and take the mantle from Zaheer Khan. With an impressive average and strike-rate in Tests, Shami has the potential to become better.
The ability to move the ball — both new and old — both ways without any visible change of action allows him to keep the batsmen on the toes and not get comfortable playing against him. In IPL, he first played with Kolkata Knight Riders. Shami was then bought by Delhi Daredevils in 2014.
