The Story Of Shree 420 [1955] | Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Nadira | Retro Diaries

Shree 420 was another cult film after ‘Awara’ which was directed by the Showman Raj Kapoor. The film is about a young man Raj (Raj Kapoor) trying to make it big in a city like Mumbai. He falls in love with the poor but virtuous Vidya (Nargis) but is soon seduced by the riches of an unethical lifestyle and the sultry temptress Maya (Nadira). The two women in Raju’s life, Vidya, the nourisher and Maya, the seducer represented purity and corruption in society. When Maya sings “Mud Mud ke na dekh” she is actually seducing him into the world of illusion and deceit. Shankar Jaikishan’s music for the film created history. It includes the ever popular “Mera Joota Hai Japani”, “Dil Ka Haal Sune Dilwala”, “Ramaiya Vastavaiya” & the iconic romantic song of Bollywood “Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua Hai”. The film was a raging hit even in Russia, Egypt, Middle East & Israel. The subject of the film is still very relevant and hence has inspired several remakes.
