#ShemarooRetroDiaries: Do Bigha Zamin
Do Bigha Zamin is a 1953 film starring legendary actors Balraj Sahni and Nirupa Roy. Directed by Bimal Roy, this was also the first film produced under the Bimal Roy Productions banner. The name of the film has been inspired by a poem written by Rabindra Nath Tagore. It is considered as a classic not only because of it’s hard hitting theme of societal structure of India but also because of it’s utterly simplistic treatment and honest performances by the leads which haunts you even after ages have passed. Balraj Sahini was asked to lose weight to essay the character of a poor farmer. And he actually pulled hand rickshaws to completely get into the skin of the character. Nirupa Roy as the wife and Master Rattan Kumar as the son complement Sahni perfectly. While comedian Jagdeep played a boot-polish boy, the film also had a fleeting appearance by Mehmood. But the star attraction of “Do Bigha Zamin” was the Special appearance of Meena Kumari who was keen to be a part of this film after seeing the rushes. It is said that the trend of special appearances started with this film. The film won many hearts and also won awards at the Cannes Film Festival and Karlovy Vary Film Festival. It also fetched a National award for Bimal Roy besides the Best Film and Best Director awards at the inaugural Filmfare Awards. But the biggest compliment for the film came from Raj Kapoor saying how he wished he had made the film.
