The Story Of Baazi [1951] | Dev Anand, Geeta Bali | Retro Diaries

1950s was known as “The Golden Era” Of Bollywood and ‘Baazi’ was made during this period. ‘Baazi’ is a story of Madan (Dev Anand) who is in search of job and has the responsibility of his ailing sister. He is a good gambler who works at Star Club and manipulates rich men to gamble bigger amounts of money. Leena (Geeta Bali) is a dancer at the same club and falls in love with Madan. But Madan is in love with Rajni (Kalpana Karthik), the doctor who is treating his sister. The film was Guru Dutt’s first film as a director. Geeta Bali was greatly appreciated for stealing the show with her expressions and dances, especially the ever-popular song “Tadbeer Se Bigdi Huyi Taqdeer Bana Le”. The great comedian Johnny Walker debuted in this film. While the lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi were melodiously composed by music maestro S.D.Burman, Zohra Sehgal beautifully choreographed the dances of the film. This movie also proved lucky for Dev Anand and Guru Dutt as both met their future wives during this film. While Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartik later, Guru Dutt fell in love with singer Geeta Roy who later married him and became Mrs. Geeta Dutt. With ‘Baazi’, Dev Anand established himself as a stylish hero and joined the top league with Dilip Kumar & Raj Kapoor while Guru Dutt flourished as a director and soon came to be considered an institute in himself.
