Christie’s International Head of Retail for Watches, Reginald Brack, gives an in-depth look at a Patek Philippe, Perpetual Calendar Chronograph with Moon Phases, Ref. 3971E from circa 1990. Patek Philippe launched the reference 3970 in 1986 to replace the legendary reference 2499. The reference 3970 came with a solid snap on case back. Shortly after, the 3970 was fitted with a solid screw back, making it waterproof and this model became known as the 3970E (E stands for etanche or waterproof). In 1987 Patek Philippe launched a version fitted with a sapphire screw back which is known as the 3971E. This reference can be considered one of the important collectors' wristwatches from the second half of the 1980s.
