Mehrangarh Fort, located in Jodhpur city, is one of the largest forts in India.The fort is situated on a lofty height, 400 feet (122 metres) above the city, and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its ways, there are several palaces, which are known for their intricate carvings and sprawling courtyards. The foundation of the fort was laid on May 12, 1459 by Rao Jodha on a rocky hill nine kilometres to the south of Mandore. The invincible fortifications are six meters thick. Some of the walls still bear cannon marks they had once withstood. The Chamunda Mataji was Rao Jodha's favourite goddess, hebrought her idol from the old capital of Mandore in 1460 and installed her in Mehrangarh. She remains the Maharaja's and the royal family's Isht Devi or adopted goddess and is worshipped by most of Jodhpur's citizens as well. Crowds throng Mehrangarh during the Dussehra celebrations. It contains period rooms like Moti Mahal - The Pearl Palace, Sheesha Mahal - The Hall of Mirrors, Phool Mahal - The Palace of Flowers, Takhat Vilas -Maharaja Takhat Singh's Chamber.
