Spreading over 40 acres, the Bekal Fort stands on a headland that runs into the Arabian sea, giving the fort a look that it has risen out of the sea. Located 16 kms south of Kasargod in Kerala, the zigzag entrance and the trenches around the fort show the defense strategy connected with the fort. It is the biggest fort in Kerala, and is around 400 years old. The important features of this fort are the tank with its flight of steps and the opening of the tunnel towards the South, the magazine for keeping ammunition. There are broad and wide steps leading to the Observation Tower, from where one has ample view of all the important places in the vicinity like Kanhangad, Pallikare, Bekal, Kottikulam Uduma etc.
