Sanjay Dutt's debut film was produced and directed by his dad Sunil Dutt and was a hit at the box-office.

2) Vidhaata (1982)
Sanjay Dutt played the role of Dilip Kumar's grandson in the film, which was directed by Subhash Ghai. It also starred Shammi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar and Padmini Kolhapure.

3) Naam (1986)
This film was Dutt's first major critical success and a turning point in his career, which firmly cemented him amongst India's finest young mainstream leading actors as he earned praise for his portrayal of an illegal immigrant in Dubai who spirals into a life of crime.

4) Sadak (1991)
Sanjay played the role of a taxi driver in the film, who falls in love with Pooja Bhatt's character and how he rescues her from the clutches of an evil madam and her brothel forms the crux of the film.

5) Saajan (1991)
A musical blockbuster starring Dutt along with Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan, the film was a love triangle in which Dutt played a physically challenged character in this film.

6) Gumrah (1993)
Loosely based on the Australian miniseries 'Bangkok Hilton', the film had Dutt essaying the character of a petty thief who is a big fan of the character of Sridevi’s character and helps her escape from a prison after she gets framed for drug trafficking.

7) Khalnayak (1993)
In this musical thriller, Sanjay played a terrorist criminal called Ballu. Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff were his co-stars in the film. Dutt got arrested about 3 weeks before the release of this film and was charged with involvement in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

8) Vaastav: The Reality (1999)
Sanjay essayed the role of dreaded don Raghu in the film, which was based on the underworld. He won his first Filmfare award for his performance in the film.

9) Mission Kashmir (2000)
Sanju Baba played the role of a Senior Superintendent of Police responsible for the security of Srinagar, Kashmir in this Vidhu Vinod Chopra film. Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta and Jackie Shroff also featured in the film.

10) Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003)
The film, which gave Sanjay's career a new lease of life, saw the actor play the protagonist Munna Bhai, a goon, who goes to medical school to avenge his father’s humiliation. The film went on to win the 2004 National Film Award for Best Popular Film.

11) Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006)
The second in the Munnabhai franchise, the film tells the tale of what happens when Dutt's eponymous lead character starts to see the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his interactions with Gandhi, he begins to practice what he refers to as Gandhigiri (a neologism for Gandhism) to help ordinary people solve their problems. The film was the recipient of a number of awards, including four National Film Awards. Lage Raho Munna Bhai was also the first Hindi film to be shown at the United Nations.

12) Shootout At Lokhandwala (2007)
The film was based upon the 1991 Lokhandwala Complex shootout, a real-life gun battle between gangsters and Mumbai Police. Dutt essayed the character of Additional Commissioner of Police Shamsher S. Khan - the character which was apparently based on former Indian Police Service officer Aftab Ahmed Khan.

13) Agneepath (2012)
The film was a retelling of the 1990 film of the same name, in which Dutt played the role of the antagonist Kancha Cheena - an unscrupulous man, often mocked for his hairless appearance, who runs Mandwa as a concentration camp and exploits the villagers in order to deal in cheap cocaine.
