So Hum is derived from Sanskrit and literally means “I am That” . it means identifying oneself with the universe or ultimate reality. On a spiritual level, as we meditate on this, we realise that we are all one, we have all come from one Infinite Source, and a part (Ansh) of that infinite source is present in all of us. We are all connected.
“You are the same as I am” OM is the sound of universe. Om Soham ~ I am the universe, I am part of it, I am connected to that Infinite source.
On physical level, Om So Hum Mantra helps to regulate our breathing. You can practice this mantra in 3 ways.
Type 1 : Silence(Long Inhale) OM SO HUM (Exhale)
Type 2 : chant OM (Inhale), So Hum (Exhale)
Type 3 : Silent OM(Hold), So(Inhale), Hum(Exhale)
Every type of breathing technique helps in developing better breathing control, regulates our breathing and stimulates our prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for focus, intelligence and concentration.
⬖ Significance of chanting mantras 108 times ⬖
Vedic malas have 108 beads, plus the ‘Guru Bead’ around which all the 108 beads turn. The number 108 has been attributed to the ratios of orbital paths of the earth and moon to the diameter of the earth, sun, and moon. When we recite a mantra 108 times it helps to harmonize our vibrations with the vibrations of the universe.
