At seven feet one inch, Mohammad Irfan is the tallest cricketer in the history of the international cricket, ahead of Joel Garner and Bruce Reid. In fact, he is so tall that the sight-screen at Eden Gardens had to be raised during an ODI, which led to several seats to be cordoned off.
As a result Irfan gets substantial bounce, especially on helpful tracks, and with an accuracy that keeps increasing with every passing day, he has become one of Pakistan’s most formidable fast bowlers, especially in the limited-over formats.
Born in Punjab and coming of humble backgrounds, Irfan was initially happy to be playing club cricket while working full-time at a pipe factory in order to support his family. Aaqib Javed eventually spotted him, and a First-Class debut for Khan Research Laboratories soon followed, where Irfan Impressed.
One thing led to another, and Irfan soon found himself on the plane to England, where he made his ODI debut. Although he had a forgettable tour, he bounced back with great vengeance and made a comeback into the Pakistan squad in the tour to India, where he made his T20I debut.
After a string of good performance in the shorter formats, Irfan would finally realise his dream and made his Test debut, against South Africa at Newlands. Since his selection in for the tour of India in 2012-13 he has been an integral part of Pakistan’s bowling attack, especially in ODIs.
