चुनाव को लोकतंत्र का उत्सव कहा जाता है, लेकिन पश्चिम बंगाल में कोर्ट की तमाम हिदायतों के बावजूद पंचायत चुनाव के दौरान बड़े पैमाने पर हिंसा हुई। सुबह मतदान शुरू होने के बाद जगह जगह बमबाजी, आगजनी, गोली कांड शुरू होते देर नहीं लगी, जिसकी वजह से कम से कम 14 लोगों की जान चली गई। कई जगहों से बैलेट बॉक्स की लूट और उसे जलाने की तस्वीरें सामने आईं तो BJP ने बंगाल में राष्ट्रपति शासन लगाने की मांग कर डाली।

Bombings, arson and firing incidents did not take long after polling started in the morning, due to which at least 14 people lost their lives. When pictures of looting and burning of ballot boxes surfaced from many places, the BJP demanded imposition of President's rule in Bengal.
