The 838 caves are spread on a total area of 1,850 hectares. The Bhimbetka shelters exhibit the earliest traces of human life in India. The oldest rock paintings are found in the cave dating back more than 12,000 years. It is the biggest repository of pre-historic art in India, depicting the life and times of early man.
