Champaner is located in Panchmahal District, 47 kilometres from the city of Vadodara. It is a perfect rectangle enclosed by the massive walls with huge bastions. Entrance gates have carved balconies. It was founded by Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda Kingdom, in the 8th century. It is a grand historical confluence, displaying 1,200 years of history and culture. Champaner is today the site of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 2004.
