June 6 marks the birth anniversary of late actor Sunil Dutt and on the day of his 89th birth anniversary, we bring to you ten unknown facts about ‘Birju’ from ‘Mother India’…

Sunil Dutt’s actual name was Balraj Dutt and he was born in Jhelum, Punjab (now in Pakistan).

When he was 18, Sunil and his family was saved by a Muslim family friend named Yakub during the India-Pakistan Partition riots.

While completing his education at Jai Hind College in Mumbai, Sunil Dutt took up a job as a clerk in the BEST’s Transport Division. A vintage picture of Dutt can still be seen at the BEST museum located at Wadala.

After graduation, Dutt started his career as a radio jockey on the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon, where he had to interview his future wife Nargis. However, the show was cancelled as a nervous and awe-struck Sunil Dutt could not utter a single word in front of her.

During the shooting of ‘Mother India’, in which Sunil played Nargis’ hot-tempered son Birju, the actor saved Nargis’ life when a fire broke out on the sets of the film, thus winning her love.

Sunil Dutt created a record of sorts by directing and starring in the unique film Yaadein (1964) in which he was the only actor in the cast. The film has found an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records in the category ‘Fewest Actors In A Narrative Film’.

Not many know that Sunil was highly popular actor in the South film industry during the 60s. After Jeetendra, Sunil used to rank in the top list of actors in the South.

In the year 1988, he walked from Nagasaki to Hiroshima in Japan to appeal for global demilitarization.

Sunil Dutt is a two-time winner of the Filmfare Best Actor Award and had also received a Padma Shri by the Government of India.

Sunil Dutt was last seen on the silver screen in ‘Munnabhai MBBS’, in which he shared screen space with his son Sanjay Dutt.
