Meaning of 'Namami Shamishan' Mantra:
‘Namami Shamishan Nirvan Roopam’ is also known as ‘Shiva Rudrashtakam Mantra’.
The Shri Rudrashtakam, a Sanskrit composition, is a prayer dedicated to Lord Rudra or Shiva.
It is taken from Ramcharitmanas, written by the Hindu Bhakti poet Goswami Tulsidas.
It is made up of the words ‘Rudra’ and ‘Ashtakam’.
‘Rudra’, stands for the manifestation of Shiva.
‘Ashtakam’ is derived from the Sanskrit word 'aṣṭan,' meaning "eight". An Ashtakam (or octet) is made up of eight stanzas, dedicated to the manifestation of Shiva.
The Rudrashtakam is lucid and simple in style and plays an instrumental role in the Shaiva traditions.
In Rudrashtakam, each stanza is written in Jagati meter, and hence contains 48 syllables per stanza.
The Rudrashtakam narrates the qualities and deeds of Shiva.
