Phrases for Responding To Unusual Situations (Death, Sad, Unexpected Gift, Fired) Free English Lessons
Certain responses in English seem to be pretty natural. Like if someone says thank you, you will immediately say “you’re welcome”. If someone close to you says “I love you”, well you may just end up saying “I love you too”. 1) On being invited to a party or some event:
A) I’m sorry; I won’t be able to make it
B) It’s a shame I’ll be missing your daughter’s first birthday/ convocation.
C) Thanks for the invitation but I’m going to have to pass/ I can’t go
2) If you are the one whose invitation has been turned down:
A) I’m sorry you won’t be joining us
B) Oh! That’s too bad
C) We’ll miss you, maybe next time
3) On being told you are beautiful or good looking:
A) Thank you, I appreciate it
B) Awww.. that is very sweet of you, thank you
C) Thanks! That really made my day!!
D) Well you sure have an eye for good things!
4) When a friend or work colleague is sad/upset:
A) Do you want to talk about it? I’m here if you need me!
B) I can’t imagine what you’re going through, but it’ll get better

A) This is only a temporary setback; you have so many opportunities out there
