The only ambition of Sonu, a sailor, is to own a majestic and beautiful boat. One day, Sonu saves a girl called Geeta from drowning in the river which was overflowing due to heavy rain. Geeta is an orphan staying with her `Mamaji' (mothers brother)in the neighbouring village. After Geeta fully recovers, Sonu takes her back to her village but to their disappointment, Geeta's Mamaji refuses to accept her. Sonu is left with no alternative but to bring Geeta to his own house where she is warmly welcomed by Sonu's mother.A rich man Pannalal, staying in Sonu's village, sets his eyes on Geeta and begins to harass her. Meanwhile, Sonu's mother suddenly falls ill and passes away after expressing her last desire to make Geeta her daughter-in-law. Sonu is shattered by his mother's death and problems begin to mount in his life. Pannalal again starts making advances at Geeta but Sonu comes to her rescue in time and teaches Pannalal a lesson. After this incident, Sonu firmly decides to find a suitable match for Geeta and get her married at the earliest. In order to take revenge from Sonu, Pannalal hatches a conspiracy due to which the village `panchayat' instructs Sonu to leave the village for good without Geeta. Though Sonu wants to take Geeta with him, she refuses to join him. However, this was not to be as an epidemic of Cholera spreads in the village. A doctor arrives from the city and he cures the patients with only Sonu by his side. Sonu is inspired by the goodness of the doctor and feels that he will be the right match for Geeta. While leaving the village, the doctor assures Sonu that he will soon return to marry Geeta, unfortunately while returning to the village, he meets with an accident and the news of his death sends Sonu into a state of shock. Seeing the trauma Sonu is passing through, Geeta is unable to express her hidden love for him. The village `panchayat' decides in Sonu's favour and allows Geeta to leave the village with Sonu if she is unable to stay alone. In order to avenge this defeat, Pannalal sets fire to Sonu's majestic and beautiful boat, which was Sonu's dream..! Fate intervenes and heavy rain causes the river to flood once again. Realising that she has been the root cause of all the trouble, Geeta decides to end her life but Sonu again comes to her rescue at the last moment and saves his lady love - Geeta.
