मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे बुधवार को पार्टी के तिरुवनंतपुरम के सांसद शशि थरूर को चुनावी मुकाबले में हराकर कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष चुने गए, जो पार्टी के 137 साल पुराने इतिहास में छठे हैं। थरूर ने एक बयान में कहा कि अंतिम फैसला खड़गे के पक्ष में आया है। उन्होंने खड़गे को अपनी शुभकामनाएं भी दीं और उनकी जीत के लिए बधाई दी। थरूर ने कहा, "पार्टी प्रतिनिधियों का निर्णय अंतिम होता है और मैं इसे विनम्रतापूर्वक स्वीकार करता हूं। ऐसी पार्टी का सदस्य होना सौभाग्य की बात है जो अपने कार्यकर्ताओं को अपना अध्यक्ष चुनने की अनुमति देती है।"

Mallikarjun Kharge was on Wednesday elected the Congress president after defeating the party’s Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor in the high-stakes electoral contest, the sixth in the party's 137-year-old history. In a statement, Tharoor said the final verdict has been in favour of Kharge. He also conveyed his best wishes to Kharge and congratulated him for his victory. "The decision of the party delegates is final and I accept it humbly. It is a privilege to be a member of a party that allows its workers to choose their president," Tharoor said.
