The Mahindra Pavilion at the Auto Expo was decidedly huge -- I mean what else do you expect from a carmaker that makes everything from scooters to trucks. Of course, our interest was in Mahindra's SUVs. Besides the Adventure kitted out Thar, XUV and Bolero Stinger, Mahindra had some interesting future tech on display.
The XUV500 hybrid crossover was an interesting concept on display that draws on Mahindra's strength in electric vehicles -- mating the existing 2.2 diesel engine with an electric motor for added range and low emissions. It also had the Halo Electric sportscar concept on display -- powered by upgraded Reva motors. This car has a range of 200 km, and can do a top-speed of 160 kmph. And then there was the Mahindra Quanto with an automated manual transmission that's all the rage at the Auto Expo. This Quanto Auto shift has no clutch and uses an AMT developed by Ricardo. It will likely be launched this year.
The butch Ssangyong SUVs were also part of the Mahindra pavilion. The Ssangyong Rodius is a 11-seater SUV -- and it's huge, it can seat a full cricket team. It will be interesting to see the positioning of this SUV. Also on display was the Ssangyong LIV-1 or limited interface vehicle concept SUV, which increases space considerably as well as uses smart tech to reduce blind spots for the driver. Also on display a 2-litre, 4-cylinder diesel Rexton, which is far more fuel efficient than the 5-cylinder that's in the market.
Conspicuous by its absence though was the new Scorpio facelift, something we expect Mahindra to launch pretty soon. Log on to www.CarToq.com for updates on Mahindra
