दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट में एक याचिका दी गई थी जिसमें मांग की गई थी कि राष्ट्रगीत यानी वंदे मातरम को वही दर्जा दिया जाए जो राष्ट्रगान यानी जन-गण-मन को दिया जाता है. हाईकोर्ट ने केंद्र से जवाब मांगा तो केंद्र ने हलफ़नामे में कहा कि उसके लिये राष्ट्रगान और राष्ट्रगीत का दर्जा एक बराबर है, दोनों का सम्मान एक बराबर है. और ये भी कहा कि इस मसले पर अदालत को कोई डायरेक्शन देने से बचना चाहिये.

A PIL was filed seeking to elevate national song ‘Vande Mataram’ to status of national anthem ‘Jana-Gana-Mana’. When the Delhi High Court sought a response from the Center over it, Centre told court that the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' and the national song 'Vande Mataram' "stand on the same level" and that citizens should show equal respect to both.
