The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set to be transformed into a modern city like Hong Kong, with a massive ₹75,000 crore project launched by the Government of India. While this sounds like a proud moment for any Indian, it raises some questions. Hong Kong is a global financial hub with numerous businesses and is Asia’s second-largest tourism destination. On the other hand, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands consist of 836 islands, with only 31 inhabited by tribals, some of whom are hunters and gatherers. The rest is mostly dense forest, with minimal human development.

So why is the government investing such a huge amount—equivalent to double the GDP of Arunachal Pradesh—in developing a relatively untouched and remote area like Little Andaman, which is still 95% forest, instead of focusing on already developed regions? What makes this island so special compared to the other metropolitan cities or states in India?
