On June 22, Google remembers late veteran actor Amrish Puri on his 87th birthday anniversary with a doodle and celebrated the life and legacy of Bollywood’s most iconic villain. A Pune based guest artist Debangshu Moulik sketched the iconic character of Baoji from the actor’s celebrated film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge on the doodle.

The actor was born in Punjab on this day in 1932. He landed his first role at the age of 39 and went on to portray some of the most memorable villains in the history of Indian cinema. Puri was a part of the theatre group and had done several voiceovers. He made his Bollywood debut in Reshma Aur Shera(1971). A decade later, the actor broke into Hollywood as Khan, in a supporting role for the Oscar winning movie, Gandhi.

His role as Mogambo in the 1987 cult classic, Mr. India where Puri’s deep voiced delivery of the dastardly line “Mogambo khush hua” became his signature and his character from Mr. India still continues to be one of the most iconic villain to have featured in a Bollywood film.

Another most iconic role of Ambrish Puri was from the most iconic romantic film in Indian Cinema, ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le jaenge’ where he portrayed the protective father who despite living in London for years hadn’t forgotten his roots. Puri’ famous dialogue ‘Ja Simran Jaa, jee le apni jindagi’ is still considered to be one of the iconic dialogue in history of Bollywood cinema.

Appearing in more than 200 films in over half a dozen languages including Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, and English — Puri needs no introduction in the film industry, he is still considered as one of the best villians in the history of Bollywood. Amrish Puri’s roles in the films like Nayak, Pardes, Virasat, Karan Arjun, Damini, Badshah, Koyla, Hulchul to name a few were a rage.

He died on 27 December, 2004 after suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome.

Even as he passed away more than 15 years back, his roles have been immortal. We still miss the iconic actor’s voice and acting.
