The trailer of Shahid Kapoor-Shraddha Kapoor-Yami Gautam starrer Batti Gul Meter Chalu was unveiled yesterday and though I knew that it has been shot in my home state, Uttarakhand, it wasn’t a big deal enough for me to be eager to watch the trailer as several films, in the past, have captured our beautiful Garhwal and Kumaon’s scenic beauty.
But as it’s a part of my job to watch the latest trailers, I had to see it and when I finally saw it, all I could do was shake my head in sheer disbelief at the buffoonery which was being served in the name of Garhwali culture.
Shree Narayan Singh gave us Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and I am not doubting his good intentions behind this movie but Mr. Singh you have stereotyped Garhwalis with excessive Thehra (which BTW in Garhwal is pronounced as Thera) and Bal.
Your film’s characters are clichéd, the dialogues are corny and the accent and overacting of your actors are giving us Garhwalis nightmares. I couldn’t even bring myself to watch the entire trailer as I found it offensive and very boring.
Born and brought up in a quintessential Garhwali family, I can assure you nobody talks like that, not even people who stay in the interiors because our language is beautiful, when people talk in Garhwali it sounds like a song but the rubbish that you have served made my ears bleed.
Your film is relevant, it talks about a problem, which needs to be heard but in a bid to do that don’t make mockery of a rich and splendid culture.
