The world has different kinds of people – some are perceived as good, while the others are thought of as bad. What makes a person a “bad” person?

Sometimes, when youngsters speak of friends, they say that they do not keep “bad” company. When asked what that means, they will clarify that none of the peers they are around smoke or drink.

Even if there are individuals who have habits that you do not approve of, that does not make them bad, Mahatria says. They could be wonderful human beings with some questionable habits.

Implicit vs. explicit weakness

Are you a good person if you have healthy external habits but foster jealousy internally?
Unlike habits such as smoking or drinking that are explicitly observable by people around, there are subtler flaws that can sometimes be even more bothersome, Mahatria explains. Lusting after something that doesn’t belong to you, envy, and hatred are all implicit weaknesses that are venomous.

Your friend’s jealousy of your success, a sister’s hatred stemming out of your victories, or a mother’s discomfort with her son and daughter-in-law’s relationship are all weaknesses that are not visible to the naked eye but are poisonous, nevertheless.

Mahatria talks about people’s attitudes towards underdogs. Many people go out of their way to help underdogs because they are not threatened by them, but the minute the tables turn, nasty sides come to the surface. Such people cannot come to terms with the fact that they no longer have the upper hand. They have trouble accepting another person’s happiness. Such implicit weaknesses, that often get brushed under the carpet, are the ones to look out for.
A person’s habits alone, or rather, your perception of their ways, do not make them a good or bad person, according to Mahatria. That is judgement. It does not reveal a person’s real character. It says a lot more about you.
