And despite most Americans opposing military action, the Trump administration has launched the largest, most controversial military attack on Venezuela.
The US is saying this is an operation against "drugs and terror," but it's much more than that: it's global power politics, and Venezuela's oil wealth is at its center. The US attacked Venezuela under the cover of darkness in a secret military operation called "Operation Absolute Resolve" and captured President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
More than 150 US aircraft were involved in the mission, and the operation was the result of months of planning.
The Trump administration claims that Maduro will face trial in the US for narco-terrorism and drug trafficking, and they used this as justification for the military action.
But many experts and critics around the world call this a violation of international law, as no authorization of any kind—neither from Congress nor the United Nations—was obtained.
However, Trump told reporters that the US would run Venezuela until a "safe transfer of power" takes place, and also hinted at allowing American oil companies to utilize Venezuela's vast oil reserves.
This statement makes it clear that the drug charges are a pretext, and oil and geopolitics are the real objectives.
