Dayashankar ( Amrish Puri ) is a wealthy NRI living in London, UK. His only daughter Pooja ( Madhuri Dixit ) is the apple of his eye. His life revolves around Pooja and his wife Parvati ( Reema Lagoo ). Dayashankar also takes care of his deceased friend's son Amar ( Saif Ali Khan ). He always wanted his adopted son Amar and his daughter Pooja to grow up and marry each other. However, Pooja has fallen in love with a pilot Vijay Khanna ( Akshay Kumar ). Pooja's father is very disappointed with her intention to marry Vijay.
After Amar and Parvati's persuasion, Dayashankar agrees to the marriage. Vijay and Pooja get married. One day Vijay's plane meets with an accident and Vijay is declared dead. This news makes Pooja depressed . Then Pooja comes to know that she is going to become a mother. Dayashankar persuades her to marry Amar so that her child can get a good father.After a few years, the police inform Vijay that Vijay is alive and after recovering, he goes to the UK to meet Pooja . Pooja is very happy to see him, but he sees Puja and Amar's happy married life and assumes something else. He starts to believe that Amar had planned his murder so that he can marry Puja after his death. To teach Amar a lesson, he joins hands with Kailashnath ( Paresh Rawal ), his old enemy who killed Amar's father. He sets Amar's factory on fire and kidnaps his child (who is actually his own son). Pooja tries to tell him that it is his child and that she married Amar only to give her a father's support, but Vijay refuses to believe her. The police reveal that Vijay's plane crash was not Amar's doing but Pooja's father, Dayashankar's doing.When Kailashnath captures their child and demands ransom, Dayashankar reveals his deeds and asks for forgiveness. He says that he would give anything to get his grandson back. Vijay realises that his animosity towards Puja and her family is futile and forgives Dayashankar and thanks Amar for taking care of his child and Puja. Finally, Vijay, Dayashankar and Amar make a plan to get the child back from Kailashnath. They all track down Kailashnath and his gang with the help of the police. Kailashnath shoots Amar multiple times and Amar takes all the bullets in his body to save the child. Meanwhile, Kailashnath is shot by Dayashankar. In the end, the child is freed from his captivity, Puja and Vijay are reunited, but Amar dies from the bullet wounds.
