Mr. Chaudhry (Utpal Dutt) who is a man of principles and strict discipline, does not approve of his son Arun (Rajesh Khanna) indulging in singing songs and hence wants him to continue with their business. Arun who wants to be a singer starts singing on radio by adopting false identity as of Sanjay Kumar. Arun's friend Shrikant (Vinod Mehra) who keeps frequently unwell writes songs for him. With increasing popularity Arun's father discovers the truth and a heated argument begins between them. In a fit of rage Arun leaves his home and vows never to return.
