Located near Connaught Place, Delhi, the building is made of sandstone that rises in stages into a huge moulding. On top of the arch, INDIA is written on both sides. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931. The gate is 160 feet high with an arch of 138 feet. India Gate, an important monument of the city, is a memorial built in commemoration of more than 80,000 Indian soldiers who were killed during World War I. Built from sandstone, the arch also houses the Eternal Flame, a gesture in memory of the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Following India's independence, India Gate became a memorial to the Unknown Soldier, known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti. The India Gate is one of the largest war memorials in India.
