Forest Research Institute is located in the city of Dehradun in Uttarakhand. FRI is spread over 2,000 acres. It has seven museums and has every species of plant and animals from Tibet to Singapore. The institute's main building is an impressive edifice, marrying Greco-Roman and Colonial styles of architecture, with a plinth area of 2.5 equipped laboratories, library, herbarium, arboreta, printing press and experimental field areas for conducting forestry research. Established as Imperial Forest Institute in 1906, it is a premiere institution under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education. The Institute caters, in particular, to the research needs of the Indo-Gangetic plains of Punjab, Hrayana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh, as well as Uttar Pradesh and Himalayas.
