The premier domestic one-day tournament, which begins on December 24, will now see senior India players take the field in at least two matches, marking a renewed emphasis on domestic cricket as a vital pathway for maintaining form and fitness.

The decision comes amid a rare three-week break in India’s international calendar, following the conclusion of the T20I series against South Africa in Ahmedabad on December 19 and ahead of the ODI series against New Zealand, which begins on January 11, 2026. With no international commitments during this period, the BCCI is keen to ensure that established players remain match-ready while also lending star power and experience to domestic competitions.

By mandating participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Board aims to bridge the gap between international and domestic cricket, enhance the tournament’s competitiveness, and provide younger domestic players an opportunity to share the dressing room with some of the country’s biggest names. The move also reinforces the BCCI’s broader push to prioritize domestic cricket as the foundation of Indian cricket, even for those firmly established at the highest level.
