इसके जवाब में, रिपब्लिकन सीनेटर केविन क्रेमर और स्टीव डेन्स ने राष्ट्रपति डोनाल्ड ट्रंप से इस मुद्दे को सीधे प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के साथ उठाने का आग्रह किया है, और इन टैरिफ को अमेरिकी किसानों के लिए अनुचित और हानिकारक बताया है, साथ ही भारतीय कंज्यूमर्स के लिए खाने की लागत भी बढ़ाई है। यह मुद्दा पहले से ही संवेदनशील अमेरिका-भारत व्यापार बातचीत पर दबाव डालता है, जहां एग्रीकल्चरल एक्सेस एक बड़ा मुद्दा बना हुआ है। भारत का तर्क है कि ये टैरिफ सस्ते इंपोर्ट से स्थानीय कीमतों में गिरावट के बाद घरेलू किसानों की रक्षा करते हैं, जबकि अमेरिकी सांसद खेती से होने वाली आय और एक्सपोर्ट को लंबे समय तक होने वाले नुकसान की चेतावनी दे रहे हैं।


India has quietly imposed a 30% import tariff on pulses, including yellow peas, shaking global agricultural trade and triggering a strong political response from the United States. The new duty — effective November 1, 2025 — includes a 10% customs duty and 20% Agriculture Infrastructure & Development Cess (AIDC), reversing years of duty-free access.This move has hit US pulse farmers in North Dakota and Montana especially hard, making American exports far more expensive in one of the world’s largest pulse-consuming markets. As a result, US producers are losing competitiveness against global rivals.
In response, Republican Senators Kevin Cramer and Steve Daines have urged President Donald Trump to raise the issue directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling the tariffs unfair and harmful to American farmers while also raising food costs for Indian consumers.This issue adds pressure to already sensitive US–India trade negotiations, where agricultural access remains a major sticking point. India argues the tariffs protect domestic farmers after cheap imports depressed local prices, while US lawmakers warn of long-term damage to farm incomes and exports.
