A lawyer was savagely mauled in the Arctic, and we went back with him to investigate why climate change is causing more polar bears to attack humans.
Polar Bear Apocalypse tells the tale of Rick Johnson, 60, who went on a Sierra Club-sponsored hike into Torngat National Park in Canada this July, was stalked by a polar bear for five days, and then one night woke up in his tent just as the bear tore Rick's jaw off and snapped his spine, before his fellow hikers could save him. For Polar Bear Apocalypse, VICE and Rick return to Torngat, where Rick will retrace his steps and retell his story.
Polar bear attacks on humans, according to researchers, have increased in Canada by as much as 300% in the past five years, due to receding Atlantic ice formations, and they're expected to increase by another 1000% in the next ten years. Rick's nightmare is only going to become more common for wilderness hikers in the future, and Polar Bear Apocalypse explores this coming danger through the fascinating story of Rick's horrific descent into the dark heart of the Torngat Mountains, combined with an investigation of the changing climate of Torngat today.
